Stationsomgeving Borgloon

In the former station area of Borgloon, a new pavilion is emerging that will serve both as a gateway and a meeting place. This pavilion plays a key role in the development of the former railway line 23, which connects Tongeren and Sint-Truiden and forms part of Limburg’s iconic cycling network. The building functions not only as a starting point for cyclists and walkers, but also as an anchor for a neighborhood in transition, offering inviting meeting spaces for residents and visitors alike.

The pavilion marks the final piece in the redevelopment of the station area, where the fruit experience center and the renovated steam syrup factory have already breathed new life into the site's historical value. At the same time, the building signifies the beginning of further redevelopment of the Fruitspoor and the Roman Road into a high-quality loop in Limburg’s cycling network.

Referencing the rhythm and material use of the former railway, the new station pavilion is built entirely out of wood. Its elongated and rhythmic design enhances the unique experience of the old railway line, while also serving as a thoughtful connector between the site's varying levels. This approach has enabled the integration of an easily accessible parking area that remains out of sight from the station square, preserving the openness and historical character of the location. The use of sustainable materials creates a bridge between past and future, and between the area’s industrial heritage and the power of nature.

More than a forward-looking design, the pavilion also acts as a catalyst for sustainable and local tourism. The building targets the many cyclists and walkers traversing the region, offering unique access to Borgloon’s rich heritage and beautiful landscapes. The project promotes mindful forms of tourism, with respect for the environment at its core, contributing to a sustainable future for the region.

This project was commissioned by the City of Borgloon and the Province of Limburg, and realized in close collaboration with Buro Landschap, Geo-tec, Arcade, and Liswood & Tache. The construction was carried out by contractors Keulen-Aertsen.
