The competition is connected with the extension of the urban fabric of Beringen-Mijn.
Establishing a school at the former mining site helps to make this site become part of the social and economic fabric of the city of Beringen once again. The focus is on the touristic and recreational components that are linked to the urban functions of living, working, shopping and education.
This new school adds a new layer and creates synergies with existing recreational and educational elements. It also gives a listed building a new lease of life and brings children and young people into contact with their cultural heritage.
In the design for the reconversion of the vestiary building, the team started from an optimal expression of the building as it is. Both spatially and physically, connections are made within the existing structure. An intelligent growth scenario is proposed for both the school and the outdoor facilities.
